Prepare with commonly asked questions for this role
A 2026 Amex analyst candidate reported this behavioural question. Give a three-part answer: one skill the JD asks for (Excel, structured problem-solving, clear communication), one proof of it (a project, internship or coursework example with a result), and one reason you want to learn merchant and data operations. Keep it under a minute and avoid generic lines like 'hard-working team player'.
Resume-based questions are reported across Amex analyst interviews. Pick the project closest to data or process work. Cover the problem, the data you used, what you did in Excel, SQL or another tool, what you found, and what changed because of it. Be ready for follow-ups on any tool or number you list.
Guesstimates are reported in Amex analyst interviews, though not necessarily for this role. Structure it out loud: city population, share of businesses that are card-accepting (retail, restaurants, travel, online), split by size, then a rough share that accept Amex. State assumptions clearly, sanity-check the total, and say what data would improve the estimate. The method matters more than the number.
The JD mentions data-quality gaps, hierarchy information and data extraction using Excel or SQL. Excel: use Remove Duplicates on a copy, or COUNTIF on the key column to flag repeats, or a PivotTable counting rows per key. SQL: SELECT merchant_id, COUNT(*) FROM merchants GROUP BY merchant_id HAVING COUNT(*) > 1; Say that you would confirm with the data owner before deleting anything.
In an open-loop network such as Visa or Mastercard, separate banks issue cards and sign up merchants. In a closed-loop network the company plays several roles itself: American Express acts as issuer, network and merchant acquirer, according to a payments explainer. That is why merchant account data matters so much to this team. If unsure, say what you know and what you would read to learn more.
